Developing Radical (approaches to) Equity in Aging and Memory DREAM Lab
The DREAM lab is focused on studying the social and structural determinants of cognitive aging and risk factors that contribute to dementia among Black older adults. We use mixed methodological research approaches in our work to improve measurement and ground our understanding in lived experiences. Our lab is also committed to the development and implementation of culturally-grounded experiences that foster healing and wellbeing through the arts. We are specifically interested in the (1) application of Afrofuturism and creative aging as a method and praxis that drives social change and promotes brain health equity and (2) mechanisms of action. By exploring the intersections of cognitive aging, radical imagination, Afrofuturism and the arts, we aim to challenge existing paradigms, center Black elders’ experiences, and co-create transformative futures alongside community members where brain health and wellness is accessible to all.
